Calculate Take-Home Pay →Understanding Salary Conversions
Salary conversions are essential when comparing job offers that use different pay frequencies. An hourly rate may seem low, but when annualized could be competitive with a quoted annual salary, especially when overtime is factored in.
Standard conversions assume 52 weeks per year, 26 biweekly periods, 24 semi-monthly periods, and 12 months. Daily rates assume 260 working days (52 weeks times 5 days). Hourly conversions depend on your hours per week.
Keep in mind that salaried employees may work more than 40 hours per week without additional pay, while hourly employees often receive overtime (1.5x) for hours over 40. When comparing offers, consider total compensation including benefits, retirement matching, and bonuses.
Biweekly pay (every two weeks, 26 paychecks) differs from semi-monthly pay (twice per month, 24 paychecks). Biweekly employees get two extra paychecks per year, which can impact budgeting.
Salary Conversion Formulas
Where:
Hourly = Annual / (52 x hours per week)
Daily = Annual / 260 working days
Weekly = Annual / 52 weeks
Biweekly = Annual / 26 pay periods
Semi-Monthly = Annual / 24 pay periods
Monthly = Annual / 12 months
Example
An employee earning $25/hour working 40 hours per week:
- • Annual = $25 x 40 x 52 = $52,000
- • Monthly = $52,000 / 12 = $4,333.33
- • Biweekly = $52,000 / 26 = $2,000.00
- • Daily = $52,000 / 260 = $200.00
